Are you the type of person who just can't go to bed hungry? Or perhaps you fall asleep early, and then find yourself wide awake at midnight, so you head to the kitchen and grab a snack to satisfy your cravings. If this isn't your style, most likely you've been told that late-night munching makes way for weight gain — something to steer clear of. But what's the truth?
While there's a lot of speculation circulating lately, Men’s Health
nutrition advisor Alan Aragon, M.S., simply says that “it doesn’t matter." Regardless of when you chow down, a calorie is a calorie.
You expend your energy in various ways throughout the day, whether it's through active energy, like exercising, or through resting energy, your body is either storing or burning fat. Aragon notes that overall, your body's weight loss depends on the difference between your fat storage and your fat oxidation. And if you eat the same amount of calories as you burn, your weight will stay the same.
“The energy doesn’t reappear and disappear out of nowhere,” says Aragon, who says you should stop focusing on when you eat, as it doesn't matter whether the calories you consume are distributed in three meals throughout the day, or one big meal in the evening.
What's important to takeaway is that if you eat a burger and fries at 6pm, and your friend eats a burger and fries at 9pm, you'll both still be consuming the same amount of calories. Time isn't a factor. So for weight loss management, it's necessary to note that you should focus on not overeating.
