Vivienne Westwood's Domestic Violence Mannequins

December 27, 2013 2 min read

Vivienne Westwood is a high end couture British Designer whose clothing has been seen on the most glamorous women of the century.  She is an icon in her own right.  But on November 25th (Worldwide Day Against Women's Abuse), of 2012 Vivienne Westwood chose to highlight something other than her glamorous dresses in her flagship store in Milan, Italy with the help of ad agency Leo Burnett Milan. Flanked by two other mannequins, one being the iconic Union Jack dress, is a mannequin sitting with a dress hanging off her shoulder...bruises blossoming on her eye, mouth, arm, neck, shoulder, and leg.  Behind her is a sign, written in Italian, calling attention to the fact that 1 in 3 women in Italy is the victim of domestic violence and that 120 women died that year previously from domestic violence related injuries.  One woman.  One woman every three days. westwood-mannequins1 Italy is not the only country to maintain such a stigma regarding domestic violence...it happens all over the world.  The age old belief is that issues between a man and wife are not the purview of the public is a belief that has yet to be shaken from the modern day fabric of life. Capture_d_e_cran_2013_04_04_a_11.02.11 And while other stores have been 'shocking' the world with plus-size models and models with 'breast implants' it is important to note just how much of a platform the fashion world does have.  In the video highlighting the storefront and its display the shocked faces of passerby's brings hope to the belief that society can change...society can start to speak out about the murders and ill-treatment of its women.   All to often we become engrossed in the minutia of what women face that we forget the women that are truly suffering...suffering at the hands of those that should be protecting them because every bruise leaves an eternal mark on a woman's soul.
