Why Is Organic Food So Expensive?

August 19, 2015 2 min read

Food that is certified organic and are in compliance with standards during handling, processing, storage, and production tend to be more expensive. The reason behind the costly price is because producing the food with social and ecological factors are expensive. Rather than growing the food with fertilizers or synthetic pesticides, an organic farmer will experience added costs when using all-natural farming practices to prevent disease and pests. This will enhance the health of soil so they can raise the animals in a more humane way. Organic farming practices refrain from using chemicals to control disease, weeds, and pests – that in itself is a lot of work for farmers. Organic farms use specific management practice related to the site. Conventional farmers will use chemical sprays to kill weeds, and organic farmers will weed out their crops by hand. The extra effort and time it takes to sell, ship, and raise organic food will increase the price. Having extra workers on the farm will increase the money being spent. In addition, the cost to transport goods is another major factor to consider. Organic farmers experience added costs so they can produce healthy food for the environment. Below is a closer look into how organic certification impacts the practice of farmers. organic food
  1. – Organic Certification
There are many costs that are involved with getting organic certification. There isn’t just an annual fee, certain farms need to hire extra employees to help with modifications or record-keeping with their equipment and land. ertert546456546fdfgfdgd
  1. – Organic Fertilizer
The conventional farms use a chemical fertilizer as they are cheaper to purchase. Organic farmers will use compost or manure for fertilizer. These types of fertilizer are expensive to ship. retert54654654dg
  1. – Weeding By Hand
Manual labour means additional costs. Organic crops are weeded by hand, which means the farm will typically have to hire workers. ertrt54566fdgdfg
  1. – No Use of Growth Enhancers
Organic products don’t use growth hormones and enhancers, which means that animals and crops will take longer in order to reach maturity. This means that there is a delay in profit when it comes to sales. Not to mention, the cost of raising the organic food longer. Source: Fox News
