Why Society Needs To Redefine Traditional Beauty Standards

I started wearing makeup when I was 13, and I admired the way products could create the face that I wanted to show the world. I walked into school feeling confident and accepted by others, I truly felt like I was beautiful. Then one day when I was 14, I remember getting on the school bus and realizing I had forgotten to put on foundation and concealer. I literally broke into tears because I was mortified that my classmates were going to witness how I really looked. young girls wearing makeup As we grow up, we see that there are a lot of rules when it comes to makeup. A girl who decides not to wear makeup may be viewed as a little weird, or immature. A girl who wears "too much" makeup gets typecast as asking for attention. Em Ford has a popular Youtube vlog called My Pale Skin Blog, and she recently showed the world how the double standard of makeup has brutally affected her life. In a video, Em shows the hateful comments she receives for wearing a lot of makeup to cover up her severe acne. em ford beauty standards “This is false advertising." remarks a commenter. But when Em wipes away the layers of makeup to reveal her blemished complexion, the comments become even more aggressive. "I can’t even look at her. WTF is wrong with her face?” demands a commenter. In today's society, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. So what is the right answer? What is the 'perfect' amount of makeup to wear in order to be accepted and embraced? Well, the truth is that whatever you do is perfect. If makeup feels icky on your skin, or you're simply cool with the beauty of your natural face; you're perfect. If you love the feeling of painting your face and creating amazing art with products; you're perfect. If one day you wake up and spend hours in the mirror, and the next you face the world with a naked visage; you're perfect. THIS is what I wish someone told me when I was 14. What are your thoughts?
