Woman Has 12 Liters Of Fat Sucked From Legs To Make Her Thighs Appear "Normal"

Faye Rodgers-Harris, 40, has been battling her weight for the better part of 30 years. The sort of struggle that is all too familiar for many of us. Although she managed to drop a significant amount of weight with the help of a gastric band, she was never able to slim down her legs. Rodgers-Harris' battles against her legs began early. She says she often avoided participating in sports at school because she was self-conscious about the size of her legs. Nothing she did made any difference. "My legs were so big they would rub together from the top of the inner thigh down to the knee, causing me to be extremely uncomfortable and often sore to the point of bleeding," she said. "No matter what I did they just seemed to get fatter." lipo lipo2 This discomfort did little to help her overall weight. She explains, "I became deeply depressed about my appearance, especially my arms and legs, and in turn I gained more and more weight until I got to almost 23 stone [332 pounds]. At one stage my legs were 36 inches - the same size as my husband's waist." lipo5 Everything changed for Rodgers-Harris when she was diagnosed with lipoedema, a condition that causes fat cells to expand in the legs, making them grow to an abnormal size. She got this diagnosis after losing 140 pounds and doing a consult for skin removal surgery with plastic surgeon, Anne Dancey. Dancey says, "Lipoedemais a condition which causes the legs, and sometimes the arms, to accumulate distinct patterns of fatty tissue. It can occur in women of all sizes, from the seriously underweight to the morbidly obese but, unlike normal fat, lipoedematous fat cannot be lost through diet and exercise. As soon as I saw Faye I knew she was suffering from lipoedema." lipo3 The good news that Dancey had for Rodgers-Harris was that although she was an extreme case, she could be treated through liposuction. She says, "I had given up hope of my legs ever being a normal size. I knew it would be a painful process but I also knew I just had to go for it." lipo4 Now 189 pounds and a size 16, Rodgers-Harris, supported by husband Richard and her parents, enjoys the way she looks and feels. "Richard has watched my confidence grow as my body shrank and he has been a constant support through it all. I really don't think I could have done it without him," she said. "My parents have been amazing, supporting me mentally, physically and financially even though they were terrified at the thought of me having such huge and drastic procedures. They always said they loved me whatever weight I was but I think they knew how important it was to me to change the way I looked. For the first time in years, I am happy and contented with the way I look."
