Better, Together: Power Food Combinations for Fat Loss

Tag team your weight loss with these superheroes and their sidekicks. Just say beat it to the bulge and eat with food combining (FC) in mind. Some foods are better together because they optimize your metabolism making it easier to maintain or lose weight. By building up your knowledge on winning combos, you’re one step closer to your weight loss goals.

The Science of Food Combining & How to Make it Work for You

Originally conceived in India food combining or trophology is about structuring meals around ingredients that pair well together to optimize digestion. Foods are broken down into groups: fruit, vegetables, protein, fats and starch. The basic commandments of FC are:

  • Consume fruit with only fruit on an empty stomach.
  • Veggies with every meal.
  • Mixing protein, starches and fat is a no-go zone.

We’re not saying we’ve bought into this old fashioned trend  — not when all the advances in science have made a compelling case as to why FC is as mythical as a freakin’ unicorn. But, the concept of dynamic partnerships between foods to get your metabolism moving is something we can get on board with. We also agree that eating more vegetables can only benefit you. But, one sticking point for us, law #3 claims spaghetti and meatballs is a no-no. Dream on! For two reasons we shake our heads at this:

  1. It’s spaghetti and meatballs...come on!
  2. FC says mixing meals (fat with carb) isn’t something our body can digest but that’s a fallacy, the body has evolved to digest whatever blend of foods we dump into it.

But just because the reasoning behind FC has been debunked doesn’t mean we can’t apply some of its philosophies to get us eating better. Bottom line, optimal health means eating a well-balanced diet. Better quality fuel (foods naturally rich in fiber and protein) in the tank will keep you satiated to prevent snacking and help you shed the pounds.
