Let's get this out of the way: yes, your body absolutely needs to detox. This waste elimination is essential to removing dangerous, disease causing toxins from your system. These toxins cancause serious problems, ranging from hormonal imbalances, fatigue, weakened immunities and even diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

The real question is: do you need to help your body detox?

The easiest (and for the most part accurate) way to answer this is to sayno, you do not need to help your body detox. Your body is perfectly capable of detoxifying itself. Your liver and kidneys remove toxins, as do bowel movements, urination and sweat. There isno convincing scientific evidence that detox diets can rid your body of dangerous substances.

Detox diets include (but are not limited to):

  • Juicing or liquid diets
  • Fasting for more than 24 hours
  • Using enemas, colon cleansing or laxatives
  • Taking detox supplements or herbal remedies
  • Eliminating entire macro-nutrient groups (i.e. carbs, proteins or fats)

In fact, detox diets are for the most partabsolutely unnecessary, and can even do more harm than good. Many experts agree they put undue stress on your system and canactually result in malnutrition, electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal issues and even kidney or heart failure or septicemia and perforation of your intestinal wall, which couldbe life-threatening.

BUT  — and you knew this was coming  — you may need to get out of your own way and let your body do what it does best. In other words: start eating right and exercising regularly. When people experience weight loss and increased energy from a detox diet (usually one of the less extreme ones), it is usually because they are losing water weight and/or are doing what they should have been doing in the first place: exercising and eating a clean diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein while abstaining from toxins like processed sugar and alcohol.

So no, Fit Fam, you don't need to detox your body, but you do have to let your body detox itself. Eat healthfully. Exercise. It always come back to this: take care of yourself and you’ll be on your way to living your best life in your best body.
