Welcome to our Retro Workout Party - today we are presenting Cindy Crawford’s ‘Shape Your Body’ workout tape from 1992. The full version of the original VHS tape is embedded below. If you remember this workout, or followed it way back when, please share your memories in the comments below!
90’s Supermodel Cindy Crawford's fantastic shape was the result of stretching and toning regimens designed by New York-based personal trainer Radu, as well as grade-A genes. In her 1992 workout tape ‘Shape Your Body’ VHS workout tape, Crawford leads you through two 45-minute Radu-style workouts (intended to tone various muscles on alternate days) and one very intensive 10-minute mini-workout (for those tight-for-time days). All that is required is a pair of dumbbells, a pillow, and a chair - although adding a not yet invented weighted vest will increase the burn of this workout and add more of a toning and strength training emphasis to the routines.
The cool music and graphics — black-and-white film alternating with colour pictures taken on a beach in Amagansett, Long Island, in a Brooklyn loft, and on a Manhattan rooftop — add a modern edge rarely seen in exercise videos. However, you won't get any comprehensive instruction on body positioning from this VHS tape, so watch your form. It's a tough workout, so get ready to be challenged.
Our exclusive Retro Workout Party Deal : Get 2 weighted vests to up your workout burn and turn any exercise or movement into strength and resistance training. Take your workout to the next level and crush plateaus.
How Cindy Crawford became a VHS workout superstar.
The full 1992 Cindy Crawford Shape Your Body Workout.
Here's the lowdown: During her reign as one of the world's most in-demand and highest-paid supermodels in 1992, she recorded a couple of recordings (on VHS at the time) with her trainer at the time, Radu Teodorescu.
Millions of people across the world were transfixed by a 20-something Crawford executing the perfect lunge (the highly-hyped Seal song-of-the-moment "Crazy" playing gently in the background), lifting light weights on the beach in her swimsuit, and stretching atop office towers.
Her moves were neither fancy nor sophisticated, consisting of several repetitions of basic and core fitness exercises such as squats, lunges, sit-ups, crunches, and weights broken down into sets of three. If you finished the video, you were probably drenched in perspiration and unable to walk for several days.
She said in a 2011 interview that Radu, as he was more popularly known in the celebrity trainer scene of the 1990s, was responsible for getting her "excited about fitness." She also admitted that she was still doing a modified version of the workout decades later.
In 2017, she told NY Mag's The Cut that the latest iteration of her 30-year-old routine begins with 20 minutes of cardio followed by weights. "Sometimes the cardio includes trampoline jumping, utilising a treadmill or elliptical, or running," she noted. Then she does "old school" lunges, weights, squats, and bicep curls for 30 minutes to an hour.
She also claimed that her daughter Kaia Gerber, who is presently one of the world's most sought-after supermodels, enjoys her training.
Cindy Crawford & BodyRock.Tv
This was the workout tape that inspired me to create BodyRock.Tv in the first place. In 2006, I was living outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. The small cottage I was staying in at the time had a TV and old VHS player. There were 3 tapes in English to watch. A compilation of Britney Spears music videos, the movie ‘Snatch’ with Brad Pitt and ‘Cindy Crawford’s Shape Your Body’. I can still recite every line of dialogue from ‘Snatch’. Bored and isolated, I started doing Cindy’s workout on the small 13” standard definition TV in the cottage. The workout was a killer, and I particularity remember my legs being just destroyed after each session. As a film grad with a penchant for the 90’s, I loved how the workout was shot and presented. It filled me with inspiration. Two years later, I launched the first fitness channels on YouTube, and BodyRock.Tv was born. This workout tape will always hold a special place in my heart.
I loved this workout tape. I especially liked the short workout for when I didn’t have a lot of time, but wanted to ‘do something.’ Thanks for bringing it back!
I had Cindy’s VHS tape and I also loved and still have Kathy Smiths VHS – I worked out to this so much that the tape started getting lines through it,, best workouts ,, we fun to do,,
