August 07, 2018 4 min read 153 Comments

I read the comments. Don’t think I don’t. No, not the ones that say that women shouldn’t have muscles, or that abs on a woman are gross. I’ve long since learned to ignore those. To be honest, I look forward to those sorts of comments now. Those are the easy ones to handle. No, what I’m referring to are the comments about my face, my lips, my cheeks  — my everything. Well, not everything: people seem to like my eyes. They’re the comments that call into question who I am as a person because of how I look.

When I first started hosting BodyRock I was 31 years old. I had a rocking body (I thought) and I was strong and fast, and although I never expected to be leading workouts for millions of people a week on the BodyRock YouTube Channel, I took on that role with all the tenacity and heart I could muster. Admittedly, I was stepping into some pretty big shoes and the only photos I had ever taken were of my sister and I on vacation. The YouTube comments let me know that my body was too skinny, too gangly, too flat in places it should have been round, too boyish: too, too, too.

I expected that kind of reaction; after all, the lads at my gym in the UK would offer those kinds of jibes up on the bounce (all in good nature, and only after I would out-rep them in almost everything). What I hadn’t prepared for was being told I’m ugly. I know that everyone has been labeled ugly at one time or another --- even if it was just on the playground by some childhood nemesis. But imagine being told that you are ugly on a networked, amplified globally industrial scale. That’s what happened to me when I took over as the BodyRock trainer. When you are reaching tens of millions of people, not everyone is going to be nice. Like I said, I was expecting criticism.

But it wasn’t all bad. For every mean comment, there were dozens of positive ones. There was always a kind BodyRocker that would jump in to defend me. But the exchange rate in psychic energy never seemed to come out in my favour and it didn’t take long for my self-confidence to wither. And the funny thing is, I didn’t even realize it was happening. It’s like one day I just woke up and started doubting myself. Not my fitness: I was in the best shape of my life. I doubted my beauty.

I started to look for things to change in the mirror. I had never considered surgery  — never — not even when my closest friends would lovingly tease that my nose looked like a parsnip after I’d just roasted them with a particularly clever burn. But now, I was surveying the contours of my face for things to change, inflate, or chisel away. I started to believe that if I could just change this or that, I wouldn’t be branded as ugly.

There. I admit it.

After a while, I started to believe the comments. I wish I could say I was stronger, or that I resisted it, or that the sense of self and independence that my parents so lovingly helped instill inside me had served as a better shield. In the end, I chose to start tweaking and inflating and bit by bit, year by year, I changed. Of course, the way I looked also changed because I was just getting older, too, but overall, I felt I let myself down. Trainers and coaches aren’t supposed to be weak.

It took me a long time to realize that I wasn’t so much chasing an illusion of perfection; rather, I was warding off a fear of judgement. I had lost my belief in myself, and I had allowed in the negativity that was heaped on me. I’m not against people making changes. Quite frankly, it’s none of my business what anyone chooses to do with their body.

Would I do it again? Some of it, sure.

Would I choose to do it in reaction to pressures from strangers calling me ugly? Never.

I’ve re-learned that confidence comes entirely from within. The changes that I’m focused on making nowadays are around my training, my diet and working on my confidence and self awareness. I’m coming to a greater peace with myself as I approach 10 years of doing this job. It’s a journey, and one I look forward to everyday. In large part, it’s because I have so many amazing people training with me.

To every single person who’s supported me or defended me, I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart.  Even to the people who just had the good grace to keep unproductive criticism to themselves, I want to thank you for showing that discretion.

We have built an incredible community here, and I’m proud of it. I’m proud of each and every one of you who shows up every day with guts, determination and a no-holds barred positive attitude. I couldn’t keep doing what I do without you.

If you feel like you need some of this support and love from a community of like-minded people, know that we’re here for you. We have a safe space  — theBodyRock Insider’s Group.  If you haven’t already, you should reallyjoin the group now. It’s a place where BodyRockers come together to get bolstered up when they’re feeling down, and talk shop about everything fitness, nutrition and living our best, beautiful lives.

And I am trying to live my best, beautiful life. I believe this, no matter what anyone says.

Love,

Wow- what in the hell is going on in this world when Lisa Marie is considered ugly?? I can’t and won’t- this sole woman has inspired me beyond belief! I credit her with turning my life around at an age when a lot of women just give up… 50. I would see her and think- is THAT possible? She looks like a computer creation!! After a few awful weeks I saw serious results I never saw in my life! I guess I’m just glad to know she is unfortunately real- as real as the rest of us! But as far as I’m concerned- Lisa you are as beautiful as you are amazing! Thank You for ALL that you do-please always remember the tremendous GOOD that you do! No other trainer will do in my mind!!

I know this is about 1.5 years old but somehow it came up in a search and I’m just now reading it. Thank you for sharing this struggle – unfortunately far too many feel the same way – and shouldn’t. Maybe your sharing this will help someone else who has had the same kinds of things said about them.

And for the record – you are incredibly beautiful!

The golden rule has always been, "If you do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything at all. Today’s keyboard commandos think they are above any type of human kindness. I have messaged Lisa-Marie on occasion, and she always tries to reply to everyone. People who body shame are themselves insecure. There is no perfect human, but if there were a contest, I’d vote for Lisa-Marie. She is a beautiful ray of sunshine. God Bless you Lisa-Marie and all you do to help people become healthy.

Like for most people you are an inspiration to me. You are everything I wish I could be. I have a tough job with lots of traveling so I don’t always find the time to be as dedicated as you are. That sometimes makes me hard on myself and the way I look. I am my own worst critic. So I know what that urge feels to want to change my body and I would probably have done a lot more had it not been for my husband who thinks it’s unnecessary.
My husband says youre ace Lisa not only for how fit an amazing you look but he absolutely loves your personality, your confidence and that you with all you have achieved have kept that girl next door modesty. Coming from him trust that’s saying a lot as he isn’t one to compliment at all. But most of all he’s impressed that not only do you have good looks but brains which he thinks is a much better commodity. in his words “ That Lisa’s all right hey ” typical Brit I know but he’s right Lisa you are perfect as you are. Even if you weren’t fit (which you are) you have a personality that would draw anyone to you. Your like a moth to a flame. So keep burning bright you are exceptional.

The only ugly people are the ones that tear down a fellow human being for nothing other than petty reasoning stemming from jealousy and ill-mannered natures.

You are not ugly.

The only ugliness I see is in people who stamp on or take advantage of other people. I see it in bad behavior and entitled attitudes. I see it in selfishness and in self-absorbed natures. I’ve never seen it as a way to describe somebody’s physical appearance.

Thank-you for what you and your team do, Lisa. Your hard work has greatly benefited many many people.

The first ever bodyrock video I did was with you, Lisa in 2012. You were so beautiful and strong and mobile in ways I wanted to be. I have continuously been encouraged by your tenacity and how you always say “don’t quit”! Your workouts have helped me survive an eating disorder, and recover from the resultant health problems. Now I have a 6 mo old baby and thanks to your workouts I’ve got my abs back already! You are so inspiring. Not only are you physically beautiful but you have a beautiful spirit. Keep your head up, girl. You aren’t just destined for greatness, you inspire it.

I look at it this way, if people are making negative comments you must be doing something right. You are what they want to be a woman who is strong, confident and puts everything into what she does. You also encourage other women and men to be there best. No matter what fitness level they are at, whether its beginners or advanced you motivate them to do their best. Generally when people are being mean and negative its because what they see in you is what’s missing in them.

First off Lisa, f**k the haters! I absolutely love working out with you and am so happy that I have come across this incredible movement. You have inspired me over the last year to work hard and love who I am even if I can’t keep up with you during a workout. You are my motivation and I think you are absolutely beautiful. Honestly I thought you were much younger and knowing you and I are close in age makes me appreciate you so much more. The jealous ones will always spew their disgusting negativity, but keep doing what you’re doing for those that truly appreciate you.

I have been a quiet, loyal follower since 2012. You have been in my home at least three times a week, yelling at me to work harder ;), motivating me and changing my body for the better. I look forward to seeing you and being inspired by you. I’ve tried several other workouts and nobody has the magic you do. People attack when they themselves feel vulnerable, and I’m pretty sure those attacking you do not work out as hard as you do and look as good as you do while doing it. You my dear are an example to look up to. You inspire, you’re real and honest, you let us see the good and the bad. Keep it up because you’re often the best part our day!

Lisa,

I am super happy that someone like you has gone through this and talk to all of us about it. It takes a strong person to share and guide the rest of us that never say a word about it. Being about beauty to skill/personality. I had all my life a personal attack, and now at work, people love to review you in a negative way and blast your name out there on the internet for everyone to read…..and you say it won’t affect you….. but it just eats away at you over a course of time without you really realizing till it is too much to bare.
I thank you for being a strong woman and even though many will never say it, we all have so much we are wanting to change/alter/improve because of standards of society, others and then your own.
As long as your soul is grand, your body is healthy and you are happy!!! I hope we all have that in our lives- because those people that do not have that, are the ones that throw stones (comments)!

I’m so so sorry this has been apart of your journey. But the truth is that so many people are hurting and insecure themselves and sadly, what you’ve dealt with is often the fruit of that. I’ve been enjoying your workouts for years now and I can’t even begin to express what a blessing they have been to me. I turn 39 in a month and i homeschool our four kiddos. I am super passionate about health and nutrition and taking care of our bodies and because of what you share with all of us, I’ve found workouts that push me, challenge me, keep me from getting bored and keep my body in shape…and all of it I can do from home! Your knowledge and hard work is a gift to me and so many. And youd have to be blind to not see how incresibly beautiful and strong you are! Unhappy people like for others to feel unhappy too.
Keep pressing on! You’re helping so many people! Thank you!!!

Lisa,
I’m so sorry that happened to you, but thank you for sharing your story. I’ve followed your workouts since 2012 and picking you a part never came to mind. One, because I would hate to have people to that to me on such a large scale. Two, because I think you’re beautiful and such an amazing inspiration, through your workouts, your real life talks, and your humor! There’s been so many workouts I’m the only one in the living room and I’ll be laughing out loud and smiling because of you! Xo

To be honest with you, I am shocked to hear that people would think you were ugly. The first time I saw you I thought, “Wow, what a beautiful woman with a great body.” I know what it is like to be called ugly. You do start to believe it after you hear it so many times. I give you a lot of credit. I don’t think I could read all the hate. The fact is you are beautiful. Those who called you ugly were jealous, plain and simple. Love you!!

Lisa you are an amazing woman. I am 62 and have had many challenges in life. I have followed you for years and you have helped me so much. I have gained a lot of wisdom over the years, but lacked confidence in the work out world. You keep me going! I am very sad to think that anyone of our community would choose to make such rude , unkind , untrue and hurtful comments about anyone on here let alone you. Learning to love ourselves in spite of what the haters say is GROWTH. It is still hard to see/read, but know and believe they are just untrue mean comments coming from miserable people.
Rock on my lovely! You amaze and inspire me! And no, I will never look as fab as you, but I am rocking it out in my way. Much love to you and our BodyRock team. Thanks for what you do!

You are beautiful just the way you are. I grew up with everyone telling me I was pretty but would be so much more so if I just got my nose fixed. I rejected that my whole life. My nose is a part of me and doesn’t define me. I love that you embrace every part of you and accept who you are. We should all be okay and accepting and feel beautiful for who we are.

Thank you for opening up and being so genuine.

I, too, had someone recently tell me that I have aged and have gained weight. He was just being an a-hole and even though I knew that he was trying to push buttons and that I have gained weight since having a baby which I am trying to lose the weight. It really hit home cos’ I guessed I was judging myself the same way. But what hurt most was, it was from someone that I have never had any ill-feeling towards. I have now distanced myself away from him but I still harbour those feelings deep inside but I am on my way trying to get my fitness back and feeling comfortable in my own body.

Lisa, yours is on a grand scale and I really feel for you having to deal with that day in and out. You are beautiful and I thank you for being a huge encouragement in motivating everyone back to being healthy and active <3

You are an inspiration and have kept me going after having twins and still keep me at it each day, I am able to do things I never did before. You are a blessing to this industry and you are Beautiful. I look forward to what you have in store for me each day and frankly don’t know what I’d do without you! ☺️ Thank you!

Lisa – I am sorry you have to be subjected to comments from haters, while you are providing a positive attitude and ass-kicking workouts for others. I have been doing Body Rock for several years. You were a strong, beautiful woman to start with, and you are still strong and beautiful, gorgeous! I’m sorry you felt so much pressure to change in order to feel good about yourself. Please don’t change your appearance further!! I hope you are able to find the peace within to be you! I can relate to feeling self-conscience about 1 aspect of my body that I would love to have enhanced. But I’ve never been able to afford, otherwise I would have done it for sure. So I get it. But your face was, and is beautiful! And more important, you are a beautiful person within! Thank you for what you do every day for BodyRockers! Your workouts are amazing! You are an awesome instructor and truly push me beyond my boundaries! I would never be as fit as I am now (age 48), if I hadn’t found your workouts years ago on YouTube. Thank you for sharing yourself with us every day and this story. Hopefully some of those haters will learn how hurtful and damaging their comments can be. They are the weak ones! And your are incredibly STRONG for putting this out there. And for putting yourself out there every day! Love you for you! Hugs!

Honestly Lisa I saw you in your earliest videos and despite what you thought of yourself, I thought you were prefect. I saw you as a role model. Everything about you was natural. So what if you had a flat ass or you had small breasts. It didn’t matter, you were fit and trim and like you said, you could out rep anyone. You were awesome! I did, however, lament the fact that you opted for surgery. I felt a bit let down you know. I thought you were invincible, “take me as I am!” but then you were doing what everyone else on TV or in the industry was doing. Like you said before, insecurities or whatever the reasons, they are your own, But thank you for your story.

Lisa, thanks so much for being so open and honest about your struggles and sharing them on such a public forum. I’ve been following you and Body Rock for so many years and I’ve seen you share about your surgeries, etc. It takes a strong woman to acknowledge and share their own insecurities, but a stronger one to tackle this issue and turning it into a positive outcome. Thanks for being you and for being such a huge part of Body Rock!

Thank you for sharing this Lisa. I bet it was hard to come to terms with and am happy for you that you have come to terms with the fact that frankly it isn’t worth it to try and please others. I have long admired your dedication and incredible conditioning. I think you look great and hope you won’t use surgical tweaks to try and prevent aging because quite frankly that never ends well for people. How many gorgeous celebrities male or female have we seen ruin the appearance through surgery? Aging gracefully is a state of mind, not a physical manipulation and I am confident that your healthy lifestyle and conditioning will prepare you well for your later years.

Thank you so much for having the courage to share that with us. Now THAT takes a strong person to open up about something so personal. The Internet is a wonderful thing in many ways, but it definitely gives bad people a chance to put others down anonymously without having to face the person they are criticizing. They are just trolls in the lowest sense and I hope your story will show other people how that impacts those that are targeted, even someone as beautiful as you. Because you are beautiful, both inside and out. You literally help millions of people and are an inspiration to them. THAT is the type of comment I hope you will take to heart, because you are amazing!

Was not expecting a teary morning read! I generally stay off most Internet forums, communities, and comment sections – the negativity and amount of people spewing hate under the guise of online anonymity really gets to me over time. I don’t recall how many years now I’ve been working out alongside you, Lisa, and huge apologies for never commenting before/adding my voice against the jerks I wasn’t aware were frequenting BodyRock pages. Your passion and love for this work brought me out of a very dark place of post-injury depression and bad health habits. I had almost given up on being healthy/capable, and you were such a friggin bright light in my own tiny world. 75 lbs down over the course of around a year, and 4 more years maintaining everything you and the team have given me back, I can’t even begin to express my gratitude for you being the incredible one-of-a-kind person that you are. Seriously, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Also finally speaking just to the topic of “you being ugly”, I…can’t even. No matter your confidence or what you know about/see in yourself, words have an effect, and I can’t imagine being a public figure among so many and being subject to the amount of random asshole thoughts you must receive. In my own eyes, you’re hot as all hell / stunning / beautiful (inside and out) and simply the strongest and most charismatic individual I’ve ever “known” – honestly can’t imagine anyone else inspiring me on a daily basis to jump and lift and flop around my room for an ~hour.

Again, thank you for your work, your drive, for speaking out, and I’m hoping in this instance the good outweigh the bad. You are gorgeous in every way and have done more in your own life to positively impact the world than most could ever dream of. To parrot almost everyone above me, “fuck the haters” and do whatever you need for your own happiness and well-being. Lots of love to you.

I am sorry that you are having to endure this extremely hurtful place in time. My prayers are with you Lisa. Remember “the needs of the many outweigh the …” comments of the rude. We all love working out with you! Keep Movin’.

Lisa, you are stunning inside and out! There will always be haters. They are small-minded, insecure and probably very jealous. They have to say terrible things about others to make them feel better about themselves. It’s so selfish and unkind. I, personally, am so very grateful for all of your videos and workouts. I still can’t keep up with you but you motivate me and I need that. So a great big thank you! Much love!!!

The people that say hurtful things only say it because no one knows who they are. If they were with you face to face they would never say those hurtful things. I live by the rule that if I can’t say it to your face, I won’t type it in a comment. But there are people out there who need to do that to make themselves feel better. You will never please everyone. the only person you need to please is yourself. Once you are happy with yourself, all those hurtful things roll off. You are a beautiful woman. We all work with the body we have. Be proud of it and walk tall. Know that they say hateful things because they can’t achieve what you have. God Bless you Lisa. Power on you are such an inspiration.

Hi Lisa,
You are a strong beautiful woman inside and outside. Your strength and courage to talk about something so personal is amazing and inspiring.
Unfortunately in this world there are people that make it their mission to hart other human beings with their unkind remarks! It is hard to do but they just have to be blocked out.
I am so glad I found you , your positivity and vitality is refreshing.

Lisa… I have followed you for years now and you are one of the most uplifting and motivational people I know. You make me smile everyday and it breaks my heart that you were made to feel anything but great about yourself because of some stupid, jealous people. I bet 99.9 % of those comments were from people who were just plain jealous. I think social media has been almost a downfall to our emotional well-being. I really worry for my teenage daughter but I’m going to show her your post. Keep being the awesome person you are Lisa. Much love. ❤️

Lisa, I normally do not read things like this, but your email today caught my eye and made me want to read. First I want to say that I am so proud of you for writing this letter. I know that it was a difficult one to write, but it had to be done. You are a worthy person and a strong one and by writing this letter you showed a deep, personal side to you that is a beautiful one. I also believe that your letter will help others. I am glad that you have found a way to overcome and get your confidence back. You do great things for millions of people and for that I am grateful. I wish you the best of everything and I am glad you are continuing with inspiring and encouraging others. (And by the way…I personally LOVE your abs! Just sayin?!)

There will always be haters that will say mean things, but that’s cause they are not happy with themselves. They feel that they have to tear others down with them. I learned a long time ago that I can’t worry about what others think, cause I don’t have time for that. You have to be strong enough emotionally to ignore the mean comments. If you are happy with yourself, that’s all that matters. I think you rock and are beautiful 😃❤️. If you do changes to yourself, do it cause you want to and do it for yourself , not cause of what others say or think of you.

The fact is that you look great whatever negativity people throw at you. First of all the people that publish these kind of negative comments come from a miserable place. The need to be pitied but met firmly. These people always have an agenda, to put all other people down whatever the cost in order to feel well themselves. They live a life in pursuit of a never-ending hunt for approval which they themselves never will be able to find. The fact is you are beautiful, determined and you have achieved something to be proud of. Your hard work, determination, your achievements, the fact that you are looking amazing and your supporting nature speaks volumes of you and are basis for what any person would envy and be proud of. Keep up the good work Lisa and be proud of what how far you have come and what you have achieved.

I’ve been following Bodyrock since before you started Lisa, and I know whose big shoes you were filling. Not wanting to bring another person down to bring myself or someone up, but you are the reason I stuck around. Your feet didn’t even fit in those tiny little shoes! You have been on a path that has been challenging and have really worked far beyond the common masses. You should have the deepest pride for what you have accomplished and what you continue to share with the world. It is terribly sad that you have been torn down and felt like making changes for others and not for yourself. The hateful and frankly IGNORANT words of others are unfortunately written and spoken far to easily. I say ignorant because individuals that share hateful thoughts as fact are ignorant. They do not know the damage your disgusting words cause. My aunt once sent me these wonderful written words and I will share as they need to be read and lived by more:
The First of the Four Agreements:
Be Impeccable with your Words

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth AND LOVE.

Shipping & Delivery

Due to COVID-19, shipping systems the world over are experiencing abnormal delays. There is an enormous demand on postal and delivery services as online shopping has skyrocketed, due to store closures and stay-at-home mandates. This is an unprecedented situation, and we are working around the clock to fulfill your orders as quickly as possible. To be clear, we are filling orders in 4-6 days, and we are shipping immediately after that. Once shipped, our shipping partner, UPS, will get your order out to you as quickly as possible. Thanks for your support and understanding.

Are you in Canada? Specifically, are you outside of a metropolitan centre? We need to alert you to a disruption in shipping due to COVID-19. Our preferred shipping provider, UPS, has informed us that they cannot guarantee express shipping for many locations. We have also seen that packages delivered to Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, etc, are not waylaid, but packages delivered to areas just outside of these cities are being held in transit for days or even weeks. UPS has discontinued their guarantee of 1-4 day delivery, which you can read more about here. Therefore, we can guarantee early fulfillment but not early delivery of our goods from our warehouse to your door at this time.

We want you to start your fitness journey with us as quickly as possible, that’s why we send every package to the USA & Canada via expedited or standard shipping with our partners at UPS. Once your order is received and processed, it typically takes 2-4 days to get to you once it leaves our warehouse. That’s our commitment and we stand by it.

We ship within Canada and the United States via UPS with Standard & Expedited shipping (whichever is faster)

For locations outside of the US and Canada, we ship using FedEx International (EUROPE and Other Nations), which is usually in transit for 7-10 business days, depending on location.

We ship all of our physical products with UPS, from our warehouse location in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Delays caused due to custom withholds are not included in these estimated delivery times.

Returns & Exchanges

BodyRock Equipment

We offer a 30-day return policy, as long as: it is not more than 30 days past the date of delivery; and your item is in its original condition and packaging with the original order number. Refunds will be issued when the equipment is received back to the BodyRock warehouse, minus the original cost of shipping, and the customer is responsible for the costs of return shipping. To request a refund on physical product purchases, please contact us.

Digital Products

We cannot issue refunds on digital goods such as e-books or videos, as these are non-tangible goods that are irrevocable once the order is placed.

Clothing

All of the BodyRock clothing is made to order and so is final sale. If you have any questions about sizing prior to placing your order, please contact us.
